Outwardly, Tom admires Becks for the "way he played football" (good) but also for his "cool hair" (not so good). It's hard to know what to conclude from this. Tom might become the circle's most dedicated golfer and one of the most successful, able to land the ball exactly where he wants by sheer dint of procedure. On the other hand, he might develop a penchant for sarongs, Alice bands and curious 'celebrity' mates. Who knows?
What we do be aware is that Lewis was the top attraction on the Kent coast this morning. The group in front of him comprised three men with six majors between them: last year's winner Louis Oosthuizen , USPGA champion Martin Kaymer and three-times US Masters champion Phil Mickelson but, for the moment at least, they were merely the warm-up act.
